Negotiation: A Brief Introduction

Negotiation is a form of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR). It is when two or more people attempt to reach an agreement, and it is something we do daily — with family, colleagues and in our professional lives.

Pre-planning your techniques and strategies puts you in a stronger position. Consider why the other side wants to settle, what value the deal holds for them, and whether they would walk away if their desired outcome is not met.

When you enter a negotiation, listen carefully, observe body language and tone, and use empathy to open dialogue. Understanding the other side's fears and motivations helps you craft a solution that works for both parties.

Stay realistic, stay focused, and remember that flexibility creates freedom. The best negotiations end with a 'win-win' outcome and, where possible, a preserved long-term relationship.
